Understanding the Mind: A Practical Guide to Happiness and Mental Freedom

With Neil Toyota, Resident Teacher

In recent years our understanding of the external world has increased considerably and as a result we have witnessed remarkable material progress, but there has not been a corresponding increase in human happiness.  In fact, it might be said that there are more problems and greater unhappiness than ever before. This shows that the cause of happiness is not to be found in the external world.

Buddha taught that happiness and unhappiness are feelings--parts of the mind--so if we want happiness and freedom from suffering, we must improve our understanding and control of the mind. Join us and explore Buddha's teachings on the mind and learn meditations and practical ways to experience happiness and mental freedom in our lives.

Understanding Karma: The Power To Change Your Life

Starting April 20th, then weekly

With Neil Toyota, Resident Teacher

Buddha’s teachings on karma give us the power to change our life, not just in the future, but right now - immediately. By showing clearly how our experiences arise from our intentions and actions (karma), we are given the tools to create the life we want.

This series will help us to understand our karma, and consequently, our life as something dynamic and changeable as opposed to fixed and stuck. Taking this insight to heart through meditation is deeply empowering and opens us up to a whole new creative and joyful way of being. We will also examine in detail how we can sow seeds of future good fortune through our thoughts and actions, and how understanding karma gives us the ability to transform life’s difficulties as well as our old destructive habits and negative experiences from the past into something positive.

‘Wishfulfilling Jewel’ Prayer

Monday-Friday 4:30pm-5:30pm EST (Online Only)

This practice is the heart essence of Kadampa Buddhism. In the first part we visualize our Spiritual Guide as Je Tsongkhapa and make prayers and requests to purify negativity, accumulate merit, and receive blessings. This prepares our mind for a twenty-minute meditation on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. After the meditation we make prayers to our Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden. Through this we can overcome obstacles to our practice and create favorable conditions so that we can nurture and increase our pure Dharma realizations.
